CHESS PIECE - TANGO THEATER

Premier in Theater Viirus in Helsinki 2014.

Chess Piece is strongly visual dance theatre piece set on a human size chess board. Chess Piece drills into strategies, rules and thematics of playing with cunning and mischievous touch, but also with brute strength. 

The characters on the board are blown alive by using mime and clowning. These elements create subtle comedy, but also sensitivite and fragile personalities for the characters used. The movement material is based on argentine tango and partnering techniques used in contemporary dance and hand to hand acrobatics. 

The music for Chess Piece is composed by accordeonist Johanna Juhola, who is best known for her Fantasy Tangos. Together with sound artist Hannu Oskala they have created exciting auditive landscape for the chess pieces to dance to.
